wrong as happened with many other privileged souls.» Thereupon
GOD said to me: «You have chosen wisely!»

We know of him that he often went to this crucifix on his own, and there
he began to pray the renowned prayer of St Nicholas of Flüe, who is
his Patron Saint:
«My LORD and my GOD, take away from me everything that keeps me
from You!
My LORD and my GOD, give me everything that furthers and leads me
to You!
My LORD and my GOD, take me away from myself and make me
wholly Your own!»

And today he says this prayer in a slightly altered form. He made it into
a worldwide prayer, by praying it thus:
«My LORD and my GOD, take away from me everything that keeps me
and through me all men from You!
My LORD and my GOD, give me everything that furthers and leads me
and through me all men to You!
My LORD and my GOD, take me away from myself and make me
through Mary’s hands wholly Your own!»

With Nine Years, the Atoning Sufferings Began

After being caught away before the Most Holy TRINITY, the atonement
sufferings began. One day Nikolaus was in the parish church in Ober-
riet, his baptismal church. He used to linger in the gallery, because
there he could stay with the SAVIOUR without being seen by anyone
and being considered pious. Suddenly he saw the cross from the little
chapel in Oberriet on the right side of the church wall, but much bigger.

«I saw the cruel crown of thorns and said: „SAVIOUR, can You not
take off the crown just for a while?“ Then He said to me: „Someone
must always wear it.“ Lost in love for Him, I said to Him: „Surely You
can give it to me.“ – In the evening, as I wanted to lie down in my bed, I
could not because I had a terrible headache. It was such a pain that if
only someone walked by, it was as if my head was being bashed in.
