In the School of the SAVIOUR
single word of complaint from him or his wife. To all outward ap-
pearances, all seemed without a care. He and his wife always had a
ready smile for all. Many people burdened with cares came to them
seeking advice and consolation, and found it with them, never
suspecting that this married couple were themselves in deepest
suffering and affliction as well as anguish.
During this time GOD showed the present Sword-Bishop more and
more how His holy Church and all mankind fared. But He also showed
him more and more how He, the SAVIOUR, and His Mother Mary were
suffering because of it. And herein lay Nikolaus’ great weakness: he
loves GOD above all else! As he recognised through GOD’s working
how very much the SAVIOUR suffered, it tore his heart, and often he
would weep behind locked doors. GOD has made him completely
drunk with love for Himself! Often you can hear him say (amongst
those close to him):
«If only I could give GOD a single joy, or if I could take from Him just
the least of His pains, I would let myself be thrown onto the cross for
Him. Not that I am so strong or pious, but simply because I am so
completely lost in love for my GOD!»
