wonderful and deep marriage of love to make this sacrifice as great as
possible. Thus GOD asked him:
«Nikolaus, do you love Me more than your wife and children?»
And Nikolaus answered Him:
«LORD, why do You still ask me? You know how I love You above all
else!»
Let us not forget what is written in Holy Scripture: «Who loves father,
mother, sister, brother, wife and children more than Me, is not worthy
of Me!» Or: «Who leaves father, mother, sister, brother, wife and chil-
dren for My sake, will receive a hundredfold reward in Heaven!»
And GOD tested him even more, since He saw his great, deep love for
his wife and children, but also his pain because of this separation. So
He let him know:
«Are you willing to make the sacrifice of never seeing your wife and
children again (without farewell), nor ever speaking or writing to them
any more throughout your whole life?»
The Sword-Bishop says about it today:
«That was indeed a terrible hammerblow for me. I could only cope
with it because I took refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And I
answered: „LORD, if it be Your will, yes! But help my wife and chil-
dren, please!“»
And without informing his beloved wife and children, he practised this
sacrifice straightaway with all consistency, even if it tore his heart apart
with worry, wondering how his wife and children were managing, and
so on. For three months GOD watched. Then He accepted the sacrifice
and allowed him to meet his wife and children again.
GOD would even have allowed him to come together with his wife in
marital union, since marriage is a Sacrament, as is Holy Orders. When
he discussed this with his wife, she said to him in reply: «What we have
given to GOD, we do not want to demand back.» From this you can tell
