Man’s Love for and of GOD

mental and bodily pains and the like than through blissful and
sweet feelings, which he still grants from time to time. He has an
inexhaustible repertoire of it. Then again He achieves His aim also
by periods of complete dryness. But I assure you that it all helps Him
to lavish love on us afterwards and vice versa.

Once you have grasped this, my GOD, how you will thirst, yearn
and strive for these rungs of a ladder towards ever greater love for
the SAVIOUR! Thus these difficulties will grow into the sweetest joy,
however painful they may at first appear to us. Because the deeper
the grief, the greater, higher the love later on, and the deeper the
joy of love. And so it may happen that you become immediately
uneasy, even unhappy, if these difficulties suddenly disappear. You
fear that the SAVIOUR has dropped you as soon as these flowers of
suffering and pain no longer line the path to the SAVIOUR.

All you who complain of grief, worries and pain, do come and be
enkindled! All your thorns and thistles will grow into desired flowers,
lining your path through life, strewn by the beloved hand of the
SAVIOUR.

But why does the SAVIOUR do this? When someone starts loving
GOD with all their heart, then also the SAVIOUR’s Heart will be in-
flamed for this person. And as a faithful Lover and Bride He wishes
to have this soul of His in Heaven right next to Him once. This is only
possible if in fact that soul has the appropriate merits. In His bound-
less love and bounty He gives this opportunity lavishly so that the
soul will begin to glow with love and be able to bear all setbacks
with a feeling of happiness.

Therefore, always and all the time the SAVIOUR as a Lover is the
Giver and Bestower! No soul in love with Him can take this for a
long time. She will try (since she is a human being with a body) to do
her Beloved a personal kindness, that is to say Him directly! – How?
